The kids didn't have school today and Josh didn't have to go to work so we all took some time to catch up on our sleep. Josh made us all get out of bed by 10:30 so we could try to bounce back from our jet lag but it sure was nice to get to sleep that late! We had just a lazy day all around... Calvin went to a friend's house for the day, you should have heard the French rolling off his tongue while he spoke to his friend's dad to make the arrangements. Beautiful accent!! Quincy had his friend come over here. The rest of us just hang out. Taba baked some snickerdoodles while I made a huge pot of minestrone soup. Josh and I took a long walk in the crisp autumn air and just enjoyed a peaceful day.
On Holidays in the U.S., I think we always took the time to get things done around the house which always involved trips to the Home Depot, etc.... Here, however, nothing is open on a Holiday so you are forced to just be at home. Kind of nice. Yesterday while I was at the store, the cashier broke a whole carton of eggs at her feet while working with the woman in front of me. She then proceeded to talk about this and how she had broken something else last week for the entire time she checked me out. I was so afraid that at some point, she would stop talking and ask me a question only to realize just how poor my French was. I was afraid that she would realize that her whole conversation had been in vain as I barely understood her. Not to worry however, as she never stopped talking long enough to realize that I wasn't!
I opened a can of green beans tonight because my soup recipe called for canned ones (I never buy canned vegetables!). I had to laugh out loud to see that the beans were all standing upright in the can, packed in tightly and neatly!! That just seemed so French!
