Architecture

Calvin is very interested in architecture and often tells us that he wants to be an architect when he grows up. He often draws home plans for fun when he wants to entertain himself. Today, he brought several of his home plans with him to school to show his teacher. They had been discussing what they want to be when they grow up in class and Calvin's teacher said that he would love to see Calvin's work. After school today, Calvin was talking about where he would like to go to college to study architecture. I told him that architecture students often get to study abroad so that they can study various types of architecture. He thought that sounded great but then proceeded to rattle off the countries that he has already been in where he has observed different styles of architecture.... France, Italy, Turkey, Croatia, Ireland, Greece, Belgium. Not bad for a boy that is not quite 10!
After walking the boys back to school after lunch today, I took Coco for a walk and observed some of the newer architecture that is going up in our neighborhood. Some people are beginning to deviate away from the traditional Breton style of stone and stucco and trying new things..... I'm no architecture student, but I have to say that I prefer the stone to the corrugated metal and single thickness wood!

I had coffee with Gaƫlle Masson again this afternoon. She is the woman who will be moving to Batesville with her family next month. She has many questions about life in the U.S. and I love answering them. Today, we were talking about many of the little differences, such as not doing the cheeky kiss when you greet someone, hanging out with friends in your kitchen for a cup of coffee versus sitting formally in the living room, etc.... As I told her, it's the many daily little differences versus the big differences that make the experience what it is.
