Coming Together through food....

Today was a day full of cooking and learning the French culture for me! My friend, Valerie, invited me and 4 other friends over to her house for the day to prepare, cook and eat a large French meal together. We started cooking at 10 a.m. and finished eating and visiting at 4:20 p.m., just in time to pick up our kids from school!! Wow! Silly me, I originally thought I would be finished by 2! Anyway, we had a fantastic time and fantastic food!! We started with an appertif of champagne and Terrine d'asperges (sort of a white asparagus pudding). We then had salmon and cheese souffle. Next was a wonderful slow-cooked veal dish of Blanquette de Veau with a fantastic Bordeaux red wine. This was followed by goat and/or Cambembert cheese. For dessert, I made and taught them to make an apple pie with vanilla ice cream. We then had coffee and since it was technically tea time by this point, we made a lemon tart to eat with our tea/coffee but no one had enough room to actually eat it! I will certainly make it all another time as it was all delicious! When I picked up the kids from school, they all told me how hungry they were and how they couldn't wait for dinner!!! I tried to convince them they weren't hungry but they didn't fall for it so I was soon in the kitchen again, making some more food. Pretty rough life that I have, eh? Poor Josh.... he works very hard and constantly has to battle the French language to get anything accomplished at work. Today, it took him 45 minutes to write and send a 20 line email about something that he needed taken care of. While I was sipping wine and eating lots of good food.... My pictures are of our cooking efforts. My friend, Sabine, actually went out on the roof of the house to pick some bay leaves that she had forgotten to bring from her house - this was before the wine.
