1000 Years and Counting!

Today, Josh took off by train to a trade show in Paris for 2 days. So, after getting the big kids off to school, Janis and the little boys and I headed down to the city center to partake in the open air market. It began raining shortly after we started walking so instead of doing much shopping at the market, we went into our favorite little tea shop for some breakfast! We pigged out on coffee, hot chocolate, confiture, orange juice, brioche and croissants. Yummy! We then did a little window shopping before heading back home. After lunch, when Quincy and Tabitha came home from school, we hopped in the car and drove the 50 kilometers to a wonderful little town that was completely new to us! We wanted to see the Chateau de Josselin that I had often heard people talk about. It turned out to be a fantastic and beautiful medieval castle! The castle is celebrating it's 1000th birthday this year! The most amazing thing however, is that it is still privately owned and lived in by family members of the family which took over the castle in the 1300's! They do allow guided tours of a few rooms on the main floor but since the tours were only in French today, we opted to just explore the grounds. Absolutely breathtaking! After leaving the castle grounds, we did some wandering through the town of Josselin! This was also an amazing little treat as it is full of half-timbered houses and cute little shops and restaurants. We took the time to walk through the beautiful little church of Basilique Notre Dame du Roncier which was built in the 12th century and has beautiful 15th and 16th century stained glass windows. But, as you will see from my last two pictures, our favorite places reminded us very much of the U.S.!! We all went a little wild in the used book section of the English Book Shop. I will return there many times, I'm quite sure!
