Our Smart Kids

The woman who gives Josh and I private French lessons is also the woman who has been tutoring our kids since January. She has been raving to us lately about how far our kids have come with their French and how well they do with their schoolwork. We really have to trust a lot of what she says as we don't have a lot of other choices to know how the kids are doing in school and how well they are progressing. Until today....all of the kids (except Calvin - his teacher seems to prefer to work until the end of the year) have brought home their grades for the last trimester of the year and we are quite proud! Tabitha received very high grades in all subjects with félicitations (highest honors), Quincy received very nice grades in all of his classes and a nice improvement since last trimester and was told that he ranked 7 in his class of 27 (his teacher had the class give him a standing ovation), and Max had beautiful grades in all subjects and was told that he is #1 in his class of 32! We have no concerns whatsoever about Calvin's grades, especially since his French is better than all of ours put together so we will just assume he is doing at least as well as the others until we receive his grades. Hurray!! We have managed our first year in a foreign country/school quite well!! I'm so proud!
Today was gorgeous!! Still only about 70 degrees but beautifully sunny all day. I enjoyed a long walk with my American friend this morning before picking up the kids for lunch. I was so frustrated with my drive to and from their school today! The tourists around here are out of control, I'm constantly having to wait behind a tour bus as they drop off passengers or drive slowly behind some gawking tourists as they amble down the street. Then, every street in town is closed for some road work or another! It's amazing - why do they do this during tourist season? The oddest thing however is that they just put up a metal barrier which has a sign on it saying route barré (road blocked), not deviation or anything with an arrow indicating which way you can take, just the road blocked with no forewarning whatsoever. I cannot even count the number of times in the past couple of days that I have turned down a street only to discover that it is closed. I either have to then drive around on the sidewalk (very common - don't worry) or turn around and go a different way. Today, there was some big protest at the city hall because of gas prices so once again, every street in the area was closed without warning and just some cops waving you in the other direction. It took me almost 30 minutes to pick up Max and Calvin for lunch when it usually takes 15 to 20. Ughhhh!! So, after taking everyone back to school after lunch, I hit the beach for just a quick walk and some relaxation along the water. Can't beat it....
